Travel and accomodation

The main workshop sessions will take place in the Higgs Centre for Innovation at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE).

Arrival by plane

Edinburgh has an international airport (EDI) which is about 12 km away from the city centre. There are Airlink express buses  every 10 minutes and a tram connection  every 10 minutes (service between 6am and 11pm) between the airport and the city centre, while a taxi from the airport to the Royal Observatory should cost about £50.

Glasgow airport  is also a short distance away and has a number of useful connections.

Arrival by train

Edinburgh's main station is Waverley. It serves several train lines, connecting to most of the major UK cities. The fastest LNER trains take less than 4.5 hours between London and Edinburgh, which is a 630 km trip. Taxis are available at the station, while Lothian Buses go near the Royal Observatory, but none goes up Blackford Hill, so a taxi may be better if you have luggage. (N.B. buses operate a "tap-in" service, where you pay for a single journey using contactless payment methods)

Arrival by car

Edinburgh is well connected to the rest of the UK by several motorways.

Please note that while there are free parking spaces around the Royal Observatory, it is a busy site and a popular dog-walking spot, so the parking can be difficult.

Accommodation

We are not able to provide University of Edinburgh accommodation. Workshop participants should make their own accommodation bookings and a list of suggestions is available at the ROE sitesOther accommodation options can be found through VisitScotland, while AirBNB offers many venues in the city.

The workshop is taking place immediately after the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, so participants are advised to book as early as possible.
